什么时候用页面分类
条目的页面分类应该告诉读者这个条目的主要主题。这比较像是论文中或搜索引擎中的关键词。

- 有用的类别: Category:香港歌手
- 没用的类别: Category:姓张的音乐家
其实我们可以用下面这两个问题来看看条目分类是不是恰当：
- 是不是可以就这个分类的主题写几小段文字，解释一下这个分类？
- 如果使用者从分类页面点选了条目，他是不是很明显地可以看出为什么这个条目会被列在这个分类中？条目里面是不是有明显地讨论到这个分类呢？
如果以上任何一个题目的答案都是否，我们几乎就可以判定这个分类不太恰当了。
一个条目经常会属于几个类别。但是也不能加上一大堆的类别；分的越多，每个类别的作用越小。
一个条目不应该属于一个类别和它的子类。如，英王乔治五世级战列舰 (1936年)属于Category:战列舰，所以不该加入Category:军舰，因为Category:战列舰属于Category:军舰。唯一例外是直接介绍这个类别的条目，如战列舰条目应该加在Category:战列舰和Category:军舰。
类别直接出现于条目，没有任何注解，所以把条目分类时候一定要注意中立性。除非很明显而且没有争议，否则不要把条目归类。
人物的分类
条目分类指南
条目分类建立一个树状结构。加类别很简单，只要在条目里连接到类别，如，把洋葱加入“Category:蔬菜”类别，您只要在洋葱条目里加上[[Category:蔬菜]]。一般加在条目底下，但是加在哪里都有同样的效果。蔬菜会出现在条目显示的最下面。软件会自动建立一个新的类别页面，Category:蔬菜，把所有包括[[Category:蔬菜]]连接的条目排列在里面。如果有另外一个条目加上这个连接，条目会自动加进这里。这个功能和列表不同，列表不会自动更改。
条目归类，建立新类别
编辑条目建立新类别之后，应该到这个类别条目写一个类别的简介，告诉大家这个类别应该包括什么内容。如果这个分类,已经有个条目跟他同名,请在该分类页的第一行使用代码{{Catmore}}，wiki会自动秀出一列引导文字,引导读者点击到同名条目,获得更多信息。
加新类别的时候，也应该给它一个母类。实际上很多类别会有好几个母类。如，Category:美国导演应该是Category:导演和Category:美国人的子类。如果您想不到两个以上的母类，除非确定母类下会有很多条目，或很多不同的子类，不需要建立新的类别。所有整体看来，维基分类是有几个互相交叉的树。加一个类别到它的母类和加条目到类别得方式一样。如，在category:酒，您加入[[category:饮料]]，酒成为饮料的子类。
一个条目归类时，需要注意横竖类别。竖类是指加入最合适的母类或子类，而横类是指加入不同的方面或角度的类别。一个条目可以属于一个地区，一个时间段落，一个学术界，一种东西（如食品），或一个特别题目（如罗马帝国或LBGT）。分类细了之后，您说不定要花些时间才能找到适合的所有横类。寻找的时候，可以参看和这个条目相似的文章。
竖类比较方便，一般来说，一个条目应该放在最细的类别里。如，伊丽莎白一世 (英格兰)不应该直接放在category:人物里，而category:英国君主比较合适。大家都明白所有英国君主都是著名人物。But sometimes there's a good reason to assign an article to two categories, one of which is a direct or indirect subcategory of another. For a well-argued case study, see John Lennon.
无论怎么分类，需要注意中立性。如果偶然一个类别有争论，最后不要归入这个类，或在条目讨论页讲明这个分类有争论。
创建分类树
一个类别太大之后，应该分为不同的子类。把类似的条目分到一起，读者可以方便的找寻他们感兴趣的内容。
相关的类别经常形成树型的阶层或者一个中心连结。欢迎大家采取几个不同的形式来分类：
- 分类学编组：例如，Category:东南亚是地理类别。Category:Academic disciplines catalogs divisions between fields of study.
- 功能编组：例如，Category:古罗马或Category:第二次世界大战。这些类别包括不同领域的条目和类别，如历史，战争，文化，人物，公司，工业，技术等 that have an interesting common thread.
- 混合编组：例如，Category:艺术 is both part of a the taxonomy of Category:Acadaemia and a cross-reference point for lots of things that have little in common except that they have something to do with art.
类别和Template
如果一个Template里面加入Category，所有用这个Template的条目都会属于这个类别。如果先在条目里加入Template，然后Template修改加入类别，看条目时会在最下面看到这个类别，但是点击到类别条目，这个条目不在这个列表里。只有在修改条目内容之后，列表才会加这个条目。如果发现这样的条目，不要在条目里加Category，保存之后您会发现这个类别在条目里重复。最好去修改和添加其它内容，保存之后分类表也会更新。如果当时没有内容，也可以点击“编辑本页”，然后点击“保存本页”，类别列表就可以更新，但是条目更改历史中不会出现这次保存记录。
如果在Template里加类别，使用“|”排行时候需要注意。如果只是写上[[Category:我的类别|类别排列]]，在条目都会归于“类”字标题下，但是在这个标题下没有任何排列方式。如果要在标题下排列，用[[Category:我的类别|类别排列{{{PAGENAME}}]]。
类别和重订页
类别在 MediaWiki 1.3.8 版本之后有复位功能。写复位页和条目重订一样，即
#redirect [[Category:另外的类别]]
写完保存这个条目时看起来会很奇怪，页面会显示1. redirect，把复位的类别写在最底下页面分类部分。这是正确的。如果在Category前面加了冒号，页面会显示1. redirect 另外的类别，但是不会自动复位到另外的类别。
复位页应该用来合并简/繁体字的类别。
ForexstarWiKi的名字空间
Categories relating to the ForexstarWiKi namespace should be added only to the talk page of articles. For example, tags suggesting the article is unfinished, or is listed on VfD would be placed on the talk page as they are relevant to editors, not an aid to browsing in the way ordinary categories are. Please use {{wpcat}} on the Category description page to show that it is a ForexstarWiKi-namespace category.
命名法
- Articles should be placed in the most specific categories possible. Categories should be more or equally as broad as the articles they contain; articles should be more or equally specific as the categories they are in.
- 不要用简写。如，用“第二次世界大战”，不要用“二战”。
- 不要把类别层次写进名字里，如，应该用“君主”，不要用“人物--君主”。
- 参看标准命名常规.
- Topical category names should be singular. Examples: "Biology", "Law".
列表的类别
- Category names for lists of items should be plural. Examples: "sports", "writers".
- In instances where "List of Quuxen" is a simple alphabetical enumeration with no other information on it (unlike List of Twilight Zone episodes, for instance), it could be replaced with "Category:Quuxen".
- Comprehensive lists, e.g. "List of all municipalities of Quuxen", annotated lists, and selective lists, e.g. "List of Quuxens that were Bazzed", should not be replaced with categories.
- Names such Category:Lists of Quuexens should be used only for pages with lists, such "List of Quuexens that were sdfdd"

Note that there are a growing number of instances where both the singular category (listing topics relating to) and plural category (listing instances of) exist, for example, Category:Opera and Category:Operas. Be careful to choose the right one when categorizing articles.
Categories requirements and usage
读者浏览
页面分类（和内部连接）应该让读者很快找到他们寻找的材料，不管他们是否知道内容的存在或命名。
连接到类别页面
在条目或其它类别页面，可以连接到类别的页面，只要在category这个字之前加一个冒号“:”。注意这需要单玛的冒号，不是双玛的冒号。例如：[[:Category:地球科学]] 会显示为Category:地球科学.
类别内容排列
和一般内部连接不同，加在("|")后面的字不是用于显示的字眼。这是用来在类别条目用来排列的字，这只是软件内部应用，没有在任何地方显示。
这个功能很重要。如果任软件排列，是按Unicode的第一个码排列，对中文什么意思都没有（见Category:诗人）。可以用拼音（见Category:中国君主）或笔划（见Category:中国君主/笔划）。
这个能力也可以用于：
- 排列人物列表，尤其是亚洲和其它洲混合的列表，可以用来以姓排列。
- in cases where the title doesn't sort logically (example: Pope John VI in Category:Popes)
- where article titles are inconsistent to sort alphabetically (example: List of counties in Nebraska, List of counties in Montana, but List of Nevada counties in Category:Lists of U.S. counties).
- It can even improve categories lists where every article begins with the same word (example: Category:Mazda).
Category extraction
An advantage of categorization is that it allows extraction of large portions of ForexstarWiKi. For instance, if years and dates were as below (leftmost items are regular articles, the rest are categories), extracting, say, a timeline for the 21st century would be trivial.

- Please expand this explanation. I see no way from this to "extract a timeline for the 21st century" just a way to create a list of, say, years in the 21st century or days in March. So where is the whoopie in that? - Marshman 17:32, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Where this becomes slightly more interesting is when you have articles on historical events (e.g. Pearl Harbor, John F. Kennedy's Birth, the Great Northeast Blackout, etc.) put in the appropriate time-related category. But the ability to do completely automated extraction depends on how structured the category relationships are. You'd ideally like to be able to specify that the article is about an "event that occurred during" the category or "is a part of" or "is a member of" (say, for geographical or political relationships). So far we can only specify generic parent-child and "is related to" assignments; any other semantics must be inferred. -- Beland 09:32, 13 Jun 2004 (UTC)
跨语言连接
跨语言连接可以如同普通的条目一样使用，例如德语的数学分类[[de:Kategorie:Mathematik]]对应于Category:数学。分类页面的跨语言链接最好能通过相关的条目来确定，因为不同语言对于页面分类的命名可能有不同的标准和习惯，直接输入的跨语言链接可能在相应的语言当中并不存在。

软件问题
- There are nasty display bugs on category pages which have articles categorized in them, but for which the actual category page has not yet been created by editing. silsor 02:35, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)
- There appears to be a bug - if you list more than one category, each on a line by itself, you get extra and unwanted blank lines rendered at the end of the article. This doesn't seem to happen with inter-language links. -- Beland 10:12, 5 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Under some circumstances the descriptive text for the Category appears under the table of articles --Phil | Talk 09:20, Jun 16, 2004 (UTC)
- 现在1.3版本的MediaWiki软件没有类别redirect功能。1.4可能有。
